This vibrant redesign includes adding new key species that help us better connect to the ocean and wildlife we protect.

As the multimedia designer, I make sure that the new logo stays true to our mission and pushes us forward as a leading voice in ocean conservation.

At first glance, you may not notice many changes, but there are a few key modifications:

  • We reduced the size of the wave graphic in the logo to make room for additional species, such as a school of fish.
  • We decreased the number of colors represented in the logo.
  • We updated the font style.
  • We added an albatross to make the connection between land and sea.

Why make these changes? Director of Conservation Science Stan Senner explains, “At Ocean Conservancy, we take pride in approaching our work with an eye to the whole ecosystem, so it’s important to us that our logo reflects that.”

The albatross, for example, is an important and highly recognizable member of the ocean ecosystem, and including it in the logo reminds us that not all of the animals depending on the ocean live beneath the surface.

Similarly, the school of fish we added is a great reminder that our ocean is nature’s farmers market. More than 2.6 billion people rely on the ocean as a primary source of protein. And healthy food from our ocean means a healthy planet.

As is the case with many career paths, my journey toward joining Ocean Conservancy as President and CEO is a long and circuitous one, and it begins with a childhood spent playing along the Rhine River in Cologne, Germany. Inspired by the post-war environmental awakening in industrial northern Germany, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to conservation.

When I graduated from high school, my father gave me 3,000 Deutsche Marks and told me to leave out of the front door of the house and return at the back door, taking the long way around. As naïve as it sounds, I started my “walkabout” in the United States by sticking my thumb in the air outside the arrivals terminal of New York City’s JFK airport and eventually hitchhiked my way across the country.

I ended up finding a more permanent home in San Francisco, where I’ve spent nearly four decades working in environmental conservation and natural resource management. That is, until last month, when I made one more long-distance move—this time to settle in Washington, D.C., and begin making some waves at an organization I’ve long admired.

Today is my first day at the helm, and I’m inspired and honored to be leading efforts to tackle the ocean’s biggest challenges. Ocean Conservancy had a banner year in 2012, and I hope to learn from those victories and build on them.

Last year, Ocean Conservancy helped protect polar bears, seals and walruses by pushing for a timeout on oil and gas activity in the Arctic. We completed the nation’s first statewide network of marine parks in California, and helped pass the RESTORE Act, which will direct much-needed funds toward restoring the marshes, fisheries and habitats of the Gulf of Mexico.

As always, Ocean Conservancy mobilized volunteers all over the world to clean debris from beaches and waterways during the International Coastal Cleanup. But in 2012, we did even more in our work toward trash free seas, including the launch of a mobile app, Rippl™, to help consumers make wise choices to reduce their impact on the ocean.

In the last year and over the last four decades, Ocean Conservancy has made great strides in finding solutions to problems that face the ocean. But our work is far from over.

We must continue to protect and restore ecosystems in the Arctic, the Gulf of Mexico and along the Pacific Coast; promote productive and sustainable fisheries; fight for trash free seas; ensure comprehensive ocean planning; and begin critical work to address increasing acidity levels in the ocean. This is a world-class platform for growth.

The ocean is at the very center of the central challenge of our time: how to meet the enormous resource demands of a rapidly growing global population without destroying the natural systems that sustain us. In every aspect of this challenge—food, energy, climate and protection of our natural resources—our ability to manage our impacts on the ocean will make the crucial difference in sustaining the resources that we need to survive.

Ocean Conservancy should be at the very center of these issues. We cannot afford to stand still as threats to our ocean increase and the window to preserve the functionality, resiliency and vitality of the ocean closes.

As CEO, I pledge to redouble Ocean Conservancy’s efforts to foster new ideas and embrace an invigorated spirit to tackle the ocean’s biggest challenges with science-based solutions.

I am fortunate to be working with such a great team of colleagues, partners and friends worldwide to help shape a sustainable ocean future. I am confident that together we will continue our legacy of success for years to come.

As I look back at the run Ocean Conservancy has had in the digital space over the last several months, I can’t help but be proud and humbled:

Proud of the work we’ve done to create some fantastic products and campaigns to get our supporters more involved in the fight for a clean and healthy ocean. And humbled by the immensely talented and driven individuals I’m privileged to work and create with every day.

Over these months, we’ve worked with staff across Ocean Conservancy’s program areas to:

And now, we’re building on that success, by launching a completely redesigned website for Ocean Conservancy.

We hope this new site will be an engaging and immersive experience for our community and will make it easier for you to find information on our vision for a healthy ocean and how we’re working to achieve that vision.

We also believe this new site will give you more opportunities to engage with us, whether it’s signing up for our updates and action alerts, connecting with us through social media, or leaving your thoughts on a feature story.

The site design, and it’s features, are a recognition that Ocean Conservancy is only as strong as the community of supporters, activists and donors who support us. We need to hear from you and this new site is designed to facilitate the conversation.

In fact, as you go through the site, you will see a gray tab in the lower left-hand corner of every page. If you encounter any issues, or want to leave a message for us, you can do so through that tab. Anything submitted to that tab will go directly to me and you won’t be added to our email lists. We simply want to hear from you so we can make the site better.

Despite all of this work, we’re not finished — in fact, out work is just beginning. In the coming weeks, we’ll continue to improve our digital presence by:

  • Rolling out a fresh design for The Blog Aquatic,
  • Relaunching our ocean trash action site, Keep the Coast Clear, and
  • Creating a mobile version of our website to give you the absolute best on-the-go experience we can.

As we roll out the new site and these future improvements, I want to thank everyone at Ocean Conservancy — from our program staff, to our finance and development teams and, of course, my colleagues in Marketing and Communications — who have all worked to make this site the best it can be.

I’d also like to recognize the work of Brodeur Partners and Digital Pulp, who worked tirelessly as true partners over the last year to help create the content and the design you see on the site.

And of course, we want to thank you, our supporters, for making all of this possible and fighting every day for a healthy ocean.
